- Is the listing free?
- Yes. No listing fee, no commission, no contract. The sale itself is between you and the buyer.
- Will my clients or staff find out?
- Not from the listing. It shows the metro area, a fee band, the fee mix, and the reason for sale. The firm's name goes only to buyers you approve, after a signed confidentiality agreement.
- Who sees the listing?
- Firm owners, CPAs, Enrolled Agents, and bookkeepers who use the directory, and buyers who arrive from search. Each inquiry is checked for a real name, firm, and license before it is forwarded.
- Do I still need a broker?
- Under about $2 million in fees with a local buyer pool, many sales close owner to owner with an attorney drafting the agreement. Above that, or if you want the process run for you, hire one. The brokers guide compares the main firms and what is known about their fees.
- How long does a sale take?
- Plan on six to twelve months from decision to closing. Brokers report about three months to a deal when demand is strong. Bank financing adds about 60 days, and the client-consent notice runs 90 days. Most closings fall between September and January, so the buyer works the next filing season.
- I already have a broker. Can I list?
- With the broker's agreement. Most broker contracts are exclusive, so check yours. Brokers can also list a client's practice here.
- Can I sell part of the practice?
- Yes. A partial sale, for example the bookkeeping clients only, is listed the same way, and the card says which part is offered.
