A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) has passed the Uniform CPA Exam and holds an active state license, and can perform audits, attest work, and complex tax planning. A general accountant may handle bookkeeping and returns without that license. An Enrolled Agent (EA) is federally licensed by the IRS and specializes in tax and IRS representation.
