Choosing a tax preparer
Anyone who prepares returns for pay must have an IRS PTIN, but credentials vary widely. CPAs and Enrolled Agents (EAs) have unlimited IRS representation rights; unenrolled preparers do not. For a straightforward W-2 return most preparers suffice; for self-employment, rental, multi-state, or business income, choose a CPA or EA who handles that complexity.
